The 2019 Huddersfield and District annual badminton tournament was held on Sunday 7th Feb at the Huddersfield University with players from the Huddersfield badminton League taking part. The tournament comprised of mixed doubles in the morning and the mens and ladies in the afternoon saw some highly competitive matches in the round robin stages with the players all hoping to make the finals.
It was a family affair in the mixed doubles final for mother and son pairing of Sarah and Maxwell Clarke ,taking on the Holmfirth pairing of Louise Holt and Darren Main. Sarah and Maxwell took the final in 2 games winning 21-16 and 21-15. In the mixed doubles B group the final was between the Beaumont Park pairing of Kath Joynson and Mike Hall and Maggie Johnson and Jonathan Holland of Royds Hall. Joynson and Hall started with a 6 point advantage and this proved decisive as they took the first game 21-11. Johnson and Holland put up a very determined fight in the second game but the Beaumont Park pair came through again taking the match 23-21.
Last years winners in the Ladies A section Rachel Fay and Helen Calverley of Valley St James had a 13 point handicap in the final, which indicates what a strong pairing this is, and took on Deanne Whitehead from Ossett and Helen Pearman from Shepley. Despite the 13 point advantage with Fay and Calverley starting on -6 and Whitehead and Pearman starting on +7 the Valley St James pair worked their way into the match and took the match in two games 21-16 21-16 to retain their title again from last year. In the Ladies B section the Huddersfield Eagles pair of Angela Xu and Louise Hutchinson who are both coached by Helen Calverley started on scratch against another family pairing of Lesley Radley and Jessica Radley who started on -4. The Huddersfield Eagles pair coming through to win the match 21-10 and 21-6. They also retained their title from last year and worked hard to keep hold of the ladies trophy.
First time entrants Jordan Mitchell and Daniel Fan both from Ossett met the Holmfirth pairing of Darren Main and Ian Morecroft. This was a long and very hard fought match. The Ossett pair took the first end 21-19 with Main and Morecroft battling back to make the second game even closer at 20-21. The result hinged on the third and final game with Mitchell and Fan coming out on top and taking it 21-13.
Darrel Turner was a last minute stand in for an injured player and partnered Ian Stuart of Beaumont Park. The combination worked well and they reached the final to take on the Huddersfield Eagles pairing of Jason Pang and Ian Saravan. This proved to be another hard fought final with the Eagles winning the first end 21-19. Turner and Stuart battled back to win the second game 21-18 and their determination paid off when they also took the third game 21-13.
